For those who suffer from acidity look at all the details below.

What's Acidity?
Acidity is a form of indigestion in which there is accumulation of acid leading to a burning sensation in the stomach and the digestive tract.

{ad1}

The stomach periodically produces acid to aid digestion. It is when we don't eat at regular intervals or are excessively stressed the stomach produces more acids which harms our body.

Our acidity is measured by our pH level which ranges from 0 to 14. The lower the pH level the more acidic your body feels. A 7 pH is a neutral level of, while its always better to keep your body slightly alkaline at a pH of 7.35 to 7.45. When your alkaline you will always feel better. It’s like a high and you only realise this when you shift from acidic to alkaline. This has to be done all day as the body’s pH level keeps shifting. Fortunately the kidney controls most of the body pH levels.

{ad2}

But still, we highly recommend staying alkaline as it has numerous health benefits. Remember that acids are released from the stomach every 3 to 4 hours to breakdown the food we eat. So its always good to eat regular small meals otherwise the acids will attack the lining of the stomach to create acidity.

3. Stress
4. Over eating especially before going to bed
5. Bad posture after meals
6. Excessive alcohol consumption

{ad3}

Yes, you might be, if you have the following symptoms....

  Symptoms of Acidity
1. Burning sensation in the digestive tract
2. Headache
3. Sour burps
4. Dizziness due to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels)

Food Guide for Acidity
Listed below is the list of acidic and alkaline foods, which will help to make your food choices very simple. • These foods are acidic in nature but are an important part of our daily diet and are nutritious too, hence do not avoid them totally. These foods may react differently for each one of us, hence eat them in moderation and combine with other alkaline foods e.g. mix rice (acidic) with lots of vegetables (alkaline), have chapati (acidic) with sprouts (alkaline) etc. With time find out which foods, and in what quantity from this category suits your body constitution.

{ad5}

* These foods are considered to be neutral, however their reactions are individualistic. Hence have them in the amounts that suit you.

** These fruits are acidic in nature but on digestion they turn alkaline and thus do not cause acidity. However if you already have acidity, its excess consumption may aggravate it, so have them in the amounts that suit you.

Indian Cereals and Flours for Acidity

Cereals like jowar and bajra are considered to be most alkaline and thus good for gut. Have Bajra Rotla with a sabzi of your choice.

While flours like wheat flour and rice flour are our staple, we understand that avoiding them completely isn’t possible. So try combining them with bajra or jowar flour in the form of Jowar Bajra Spring Onion Roti. Sensibly adjust the amount of spice you can handle. The best way is to avoid green chillies completely.

At snack time you can try making Bajra Methi Khakhra. Make them in advance and carry to work. Eating at regular intervals is very important to avid acidity. Munch on them as a healthy snack.

Dals and Pulses for Acidity

Amongst the dals, moong dal is the easiest in digestion. You should avoid toovar dal as it may cause indigestion and heartburn. It leads to bloating in some too.

{ad7}

Sprouts are easier to digest as the complex substances in pulses have already been broken down. Try including them in simple form like Cucumber Bean Sprouts and Apple Salad.

Sprouted Moong Salad is another healthy option. Tossed with some onions and tomatoes along with lemon juice and coriander for added flavour, it’s an easy option to make. However, remember to opt for sprouts in first half of the day so you get enough time to digest. Do not eat sprouts for dinner. It may cause heartburn and bloating.

Dairy Products for Acidity

Dairy products like milk and paneer are digested differently by different individuals. They are said to be neutral. But its use is solely dependent on whether you can tolerate it or no. So have them in small quantities that suit you.

{ad8}

Some feel having a chilled glass of Rose milk, helps to overcome acidity. Try adding little less quantity of rose syrup, as it is made with excess sugar which can be one of the reasons for acidity.
