Although liked by people of all age groups, crispy fried onion rings tops the charts as far as kids are concerned! This recipe for onion rings is super-effective, as baking powder makes the rings puff up wonderfully. The cornflour adds on to its crispiness and the chaat masala gives it the Indian style onion rings taste.
To make Indian style onion rings, combine the plain flour, cornflour, garlic paste, oregano, baking powder, powdered sugar and salt and mix well. Add approx. ¾ cup of water in a deep bowl and mix well using a whisk till no lumps remain. Cover the batter with a lid and keep aside for 15 minutes. Heat the oil in a deep non-stick pan, dip the onion rings one by one in the batter till they are evenly coated from all the sides and deep-fry in hot oil on a medium flame, till they turn golden brown in colour from all the sides. You can deep-fry 4 to 5 onion rings at a time. Sprinkle some chaat masala over the onion rings immediately and toss lightly. Serve immediately.
Likewise, adding powdered sugar to the batter and keeping the batter aside for 15 minutes imparts a fantastic flavour and an appetising brown colour to the homemade crispy onion rings after deep-frying.

Add 1/4 cup cornflour. The proportion of plain flour and cornflour should always be 2:1.

Add 1/2 tsp garlic (lehsun) paste.

Add 1/2 tsp baking powder. The baking powder helps to make fluffy onions rings. Makes sure the baking powder is fresh and from a packet which has been recently opened.

Take a big onion and peel it. The small onions are a not very good option to make onion rings. Discard the peels.

Place the onion on its side on a chopping board.

Hold your knife comfortably, with your forefinger running down one side of the blade and your thumb pressed against the opposite side. With one fell swoop, slide the knife down and away from you, slicing off the top half inch of the onion.

Continue slicing using the knife across the chopping board to get more round onion slices. You can make thick or thin onion slices as per the recipe requirement. You will get 3 to 4 thick slices from each onion.

Separate the onions rings with your fingers.

These all rings are ready. We have used approx. 5 to 6 big onions to get 2 cups thick onion rings.
