Ingredients

For Coconut Chutney
3 tbsp freshly grated coconut
2 tbsp roasted chana dal (daria)
2 small green chillies , roughly chopped
1 tsp chopped ginger (adrak)
2 tbsp chopped coriander (dhania)
6 to 7 curry leaves (kadi patta)
salt to taste

For The Tempering
2 tsp oil
1/2 tsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson)
1/2 tsp urad dal (split black lentils)
3 to 4 curry leaves (kadi patta)
1 small whole dry kashmiri red chilli , broken into pieces
1/4 tsp asafoetida (hing)
Method

For coconut chutney

    For coconut chutney
  1. To make mumbai roadside coconut chutney, combine the coconut, roasted chana dal, green chillies, ginger, coriander, curry leaves, salt and 3 tbsp of water and blend in a mixer to a smooth paste.
  2. Transfer the paste to a bowl, add 1/3 cup of water and mix well.
  3. For the tempering, heat the oil in a small pan and add the mustard seeds.
  4. When the seeds crackle, add the urad dal, curry leaves, red chillies and asafoetida and sauté on a medium flame for a minute.
  5. Pour this tempering over the chutney and mix well. Use as required or store the mumbai roadside coconut chutney in an air-tight container in a deep-freezer.

For grinding the chutney

  1. In a mixer jar, add 3 tbsp freshly grated coconut. You can use fresh or frozen coconut. Also, for easy grinding we have taken grated coconut but, if you are lazy then you can put roughly chopped coconut and pulse it more. Many people even use coconut powder or dessicated coconut, if doing so then make use of warm water while grinding.
  2. Add 2 tbsp roasted chana dal (daria) If chana dal is not available, then you can skip adding it. The nariyal ki chatni will taste equally delicious without it.
  3. Add 1 tsp chopped green chillies. If you like your South-Indian coconut chutney spicy, then simply increase the quantity of chilies.
  4. Add 1 tsp chopped ginger (adrak). Adrak can be skipped or substituted with garlic.
  5. Add 2 tbsp chopped coriander (dhania). Coriander has a fresh, citrusy flavor that complements the sweetness and creaminess of the coconut.
  6. Add 6 to 7 curry leaves (kadi patta). Curry leaves are typically used in South Indian cuisine, while coriander leaves are more prevalent in North Indian and Mumbai street food.  
  7. Add salt to taste.
  8. Add 3 tbsp of water. Blend a little. Then add another 3 tablespoons water and blend to a smooth paste.
  9. Blend to a smooth paste.
  10. Transfer the chutney into a bowl.
     
  11. Add about 1/3 cup of water to achieve a thinner consistency, similar to the Mumbai street food style coconut chutney.  
  12. Mix well.

For tempering coconut chutney

  1. For the tempering of nariyal ki chutney, heat oil in a non-stick tadka pan. Make use of any neutral flavored oil. 
  2. Once the oil is hot, add 1/2 tsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson).

This is the perfect Green Coconut Chutney recipe that i have been looking for soooooo long... i tried it and to my surprise it tastes perfect... there were so many ingredients that i didnt even know would go in the making of this chutney.. like Hing, chana dal curry leaves... well Thank You for this one...
