Cut each burger horizontally into 2 lightly toast on a hot tava with little butter. On the lower half of the bun, apply a little spread, place lettuce, aloo tikki on it, 1 cheese slice, 2 tomato slices, 2 onion slices and finally sprinkle a little salt and pepper evenly over it. Even international food chains are introducing a touch of Indian magic in their burgers and pizzas, because of the tongue-tickling taste and rich texture that they give. This Indian style aloo tikki burger is a perfect example.

Veg aloo tikki burger brings into burgers the unbridled fun of Indian food. Aloo Tikki made of potatoes perked up with tongue-tickling spices and spice mixes like chaat masala makes a wonderful patty for burgers.

Together with juicy veggies and of course, cheese, the macaloo tikki burger gives a very exciting taste and yummy mouth-feel. This is one snack that will be loved by adults along with kids, including hard-core fans of Indian food.

Tips for aloo tikki burger. 1. Deep fry only 1 tikki at a time since it’s big and coated with maida mixture and bread crumbs and needs enough space to be deep-fried. 2. Remove the cheese slice from the freeze just before assembling. Keeping it at room temperature for too long makes it difficult to peel the cheese intact from its plastic covering. 3. Instead of red chilli sauce, use Schezuan sauce to make it more spicy for adults as a variation.

You can also try other burgers with Indian touch like Pav Bhaji Burger or Batata Vada Burger.

How to make aloo tikki

  1. Combine the plain flour and ¾ cup of water in a deep bowl and whisk well. Keep aside.
  2. Heat the oil in a broad non-stick pan and add the cumin seeds and sauté on a medium flame for 30 seconds.
  3. Add the garlic.
  4. Add the onions and sauté on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes.
  5. Add the green peas and sauté on a medium flame for 1 minute.
  6. Add boiled and mashed potatoes. To perk up the tikki mixture, you can add grated carrots or boiled & mashed French beans, beetroot, corn or any other vegetables of your choice.
  7. Now add chilli powder, turmeric powder and coriander powder.
  8. Furthermore, add chaat masala.
  9. Finally, add finely chopped coriander and salt to taste. Mix well and cook on a medium flame for 2 to 3 minutes, while mashing it occasionally.
  10. Transfer the mixture into a bowl or a plate and divide into 6 equal portions. Add 1-2 teaspoon cornflour if the mixture doesn't bind. Shape each portion into a circle of 75 mm. (3”) diameter and 1 cm thickness tikki.
  11. Dip each tikki in the maida- water mixture.
  12. Roll in the bread crumbs till it is evenly coated from all the sides.
  13. Heat the oil in a deep non-stick pan and deep-fry each tikki till it turns golden brown in colour from both the sides. Alternatively, though this will not give you a crunchy texture if you want, you can shallow fry/ pan fry the tikkis instead of deep-frying. In this case, do not coat them in flour-breadcrumbs. Just add little corn flour or rice flour in tikki mixture.
  14. Drain the aloo tikkis on an absorbent paper and keep aside.

For the aloo tikki burger spread

  1. In a bowl take mayonnaise, add tomato ketchup to it.
  2. Then add red chilli sauce and mix well. Keep aside.

Steps to make homemade aloo tikki burger

  1. Cut each burger bun horizontally into two. Make burger buns at home. You can also use multigrain or whole wheat buns for a healthier option.
  2. Apply 1 tsp of butter on both the sides of each half of the burger bun. Toast them lightly on a non-stick tava (griddle).
  3. Place 2 cooked burger bun halves on a clean, dry surface.
  4. Spread a little of the prepared spread on each half and spread it evenly. Instead of the spread we have suggested, you can simply spread mayonnaise, cheese spread, mint mayo.
  5. Put ¼ cup of lettuce on the lower burger bun halve. If lettuce leaf is not available, use steamed cabbage leaf.
  6. Put an aloo tikki on it.
  7. Then place a cheese slice.
  8. Then put 2 tomato slices, 2 onion slices and finally sprinkle a little salt and pepper evenly over it.
  9. Cover with an upper half of the burger bun with the buttered–spread side facing downwards and press it lightly.
  10. Repeat steps 1 to 9 to make 5 more burgers. Serve the homemade aloo tikki burger immediately with French fries or potato wedges.
  11. Other options for sides are masala French fries, potato chips or a light salad like the Cabbage Salad or the Pear and Pomegranate Salad
  12. You can make them in small size and serve as a party starter.
  13. The aloo tikki tastes delicious as it is. So you can ditch the bun and relish them with a dip.

Hi Tarla Mam, Had made this recipe today & it turned out yummy. I had to make a change i.e. instead of maida had to use corn flour paste for binding as with maida the tikki was coming out while frying.

Tarla Dalal    Hi, Use the maida mixture only to coat it. If your oil is not hot enough, it will come out while frying. Make sure it is nice and hot.
