Jowar Banana Sheera: A Nutritious First Food for Babies

The Jowar Banana Sheera for Babies is a wonderfully nutritious and easily digestible dish, perfectly suited for introducing semi-solid foods to infants. Often searched as Banana and Jowar Sheera for Babies, this simple recipe is ideal for a 7 month old baby and upwards, as it helps familiarize them with new textures. This sheera is rich in carbohydrates, protein, and iron, providing sustained energy and keeping your baby full for a longer period of time. Its preparation is straightforward, focusing on quick cooking and natural sweetness.

Key Ingredients for a Healthy Sheera

The strength of this Jowar Banana Sheera lies in its minimal, wholesome ingredients. It uses jowar (white millet) flour, a gluten-free grain that is easy on a baby's stomach and provides essential nutrients. The natural sweetness comes from mashed banana, a fruit that is generally well-loved by babies. For extra flavor, you can optionally include chopped jaggery (gur), though many parents skip it since banana itself is a very sweet fruit. Just a touch of ghee is used for flavor and to aid in the cooking process.

Preparing and Sautéing the Jowar Flour

The first step in making the jowar banana sheera for babies is to temper the flour. Heat the ghee in a deep non-stick pan. Once the ghee is warm, add the jowar flour and sauté on a medium flame for 2 minutes. This step is important as it helps remove the raw taste of the millet flour and enhances its nutty flavor, ensuring a more palatable experience for your little one. Keep the heat controlled to prevent the flour from burning.

Whisking and Cooking the Sheera Base

Next, integrate the wet ingredients to form the sheera's base. Add the jaggery (if using) and ¾ cup of water to the sautéed flour. The key here is to mix well using a whisk to prevent lumps from forming, ensuring a smooth, uniform consistency that is safe for the baby. Continue to cook on a medium flame for 1 minute, making sure to stir continuously. This short cooking time is sufficient to dissolve the jaggery and thicken the mixture into a porridge-like consistency, suitable for babies after the age of 7 to 8 months.

Incorporating the Banana and Serving

Once the base is cooked, turn the flame off. Now, add the mashed banana and mix well until it is completely blended with the sheera. The natural sweetness of the banana appeals to babies, so they will readily slurp up every spoonful. It is vital to add the banana after switching off the flame to preserve its nutrients and prevent it from overcooking.

Important Notes on Storage and Serving

It is crucial to serve the jowar banana sheera for babies lukewarm and do not keep it for a long time after cooking. Because of the use of banana, the sheera will naturally thicken and turn black quickly upon standing. For the best flavor, texture, and nutritional value, prepare this sheera fresh and serve it immediately to your child, making it a delicious and nutritious addition to their diet.

Notes for Banana and Jowar Sheera for Babies

    1. Banana Jowar Sheera is an energy dense semi-solid supplement for babies above 7 months.
    2. Jowar flour is rich in iron which helps to build baby’s iron stores and hemoglobin levels.
    3. No milk has been used to make this sheera, as now-a-days most pediatricians do not recommend milk for babies till 1 year of age.
    4. No sugar has also been used. Small amounts of jaggery has been used, but that’s optional. Banana lends its own sweetness to this sheera, so you can avoid the use of jaggery completely.
    5. Serve this sheera to babies immediately. The main reason is that on keeping for long time, the sheera will turn lumpy.
    6. Let the baby decide how much s(he) wants to eat. Do not force the baby. This might lead to dislike for that particular food.
    7. As a variation, you can also substitute jowar flour with ragi flour or bajra flour. Ragi flour is a good source of calcium, while bajra flour provides abundance of iron.
For Banana and Jowar Sheera for Babies

    1. For Banana and Jowar Sheera for Babies and Toddlers, first choose the correct banana.  Buy the type of banana as suggested by your paediatrician - regular or elaichi banana. Buy fairly firm bananas with smooth skin. Prefer bananas with the stem intact, as ones that are open at the eyes tend to attract flies and mosquitoes and can be a source of contamination. Moreover choose a perfectly ripe banana. Yellow colour depicts its ripeness. The more the green colour, the more unripe they are. Feel it - it gives in slightly when you press and has a fruity smell.
    2. Peel the banana. Peel the banana well and discard the peel.
    3. Remove the 2 ends of the banana. The ends of banana are usually slightly black and best if removed and discarded.
    4. Chop or slice it. Place the peeled banana on a clean chopping board and using a sterilized knife slice or chop the banana. Use this banana immediately. On keeping it open for a long time it oxidizes and turns black due to exposure to air.
    5. Mash the banana. Using a spoon or a fork mash the banana very well. No pieces of banana should remain. This is very important to ensure to avoid choking. Alternatively you can also use a clean mixer jar for pureeing the banana. Once you have mashed the banana, be very quick in making the Banana Jowar Sheera for Infants. Else the mashed banana might oxidize it and turn black.
    6. Now to make Jowar Banana Sheera for Babies take a deep non-stick pan and add the ghee to it. Allow the ghee to melt.
    7. Add the jowar flour immediately and sauté on a medium flame for 2 minutes.
    8. Add the jaggery. We have suggested to use chopped jaggery, but you can use grated jaggery also. Moreover use of jaggery is totally optional.
    9. Add ¾ cup of water quickly.
    10. Mix well using whisk.
    11. Cook on a medium flame for 1 minute. Keep stirring it continuously.
    12. Remove from the flame and add the mashed banana.
    13. Mix well using a ladle. No chunks of mashed banana should remain in Jowar Banana Sheera for Babies and Toddlers, as that might lead to choking in babies.
    14. Serve Jowar Banana Sheera for Babies and Toddlers immediately to your little one. Check that the sheera should be lukewarm and not hot for the baby to eat.
