What are rolled oats?

  1. This is what rolled oats looks like. Rolled Oats or Whole Oats are also called old fashioned oats and are extremely healthy. From a health point of view, Steel Cut Oats are the healthiest and then comes Rolled Oats. After that comes quick cooking Oats which are the cheapest Oats freely available at every corner store in India. The whole grains are first steamed to soften them and then flatten into an oval shape. We have used rolled oats to make Granola Bars as their texture holds better when baked. You get that chewy texture from bars as a result of rolled oats. If you make the bars with quick cooking Oats, they will have a very crumbly texture.

So if you are baking, get hold of Rolled Oats as they are healthier and give a better finished product. You can easily get Rolled Oats in India though they will be a bit more expensive than quick cooking oats.

Why chia seeds?

  1. This is what chia seeds look like. Chia seed is a very small seed, which is black and white in colour. An edible seed from the dessert plant Salvia hispanica, originally grown in Mexico, the chia seed is a nutrient-dense ingredient. It gives you a punch of energy! Chia means strength, and that speaks volume about its goodness.
It is a gluten-free whole grain, with a very mild, nutty flavour. The quickest way to have chia seeds is to add a tablespoon full of it to 8 to 10 ounces of water or juice. You can drink it right away, or let it sit for 10 minutes till the seeds start to gel. That gives the drink a wonderful mouth-feel.

These baked oats are a healthy, filling and delicious breakfast. It is also a perfect post workout meal as it contains proteins to aid recovery and carbs to energise. I prefer this variation of oats to stovetop oats as it tastes like a cake! I love to top the baked oats with peanut butter and blueberries for freshness. If strawberries are in season, I like to add them on top as well. Great recipe!
