Onam is a vibrant harvest festival celebrated with great fervor in Kerala, India. It commemorates the homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali and is a symbol of Kerala's rich cultural heritage. The festival is a time for family gatherings, traditional dances, and, most importantly, a grand feast known as the Onam Sadya. This elaborate vegetarian meal is the centerpiece of the celebrations, symbolizing prosperity and abundance. The Sadya is typically served on a fresh banana leaf, and its preparation is a meticulous and joyful process that involves the entire family.

The Onam Sadya is a magnificent spread of at least 24 to 28 dishes, served in a specific order and eaten with the hands. The dishes range from spicy to sweet, with a balance of flavors and textures. Rice is the main component, accompanied by an array of curries like Sambar, a lentil and vegetable stew; Aviyal, a mixed vegetable curry in a coconut and yogurt sauce; and Rasam, a tangy and spicy soup. Other essential dishes include Thoran, a dry vegetable dish with grated coconut, and Olan, a mild curry made with ash gourd and black-eyed peas. The feast is not complete without various pickles, crisps like banana chips (kaya varuthathu), and pappadams.

The grand finale of the Onam Sadya is the dessert, known as Payasam. Several varieties of Payasam are served, including Palada Pradhaman, a sweet rice flake pudding, and Adapradhaman, made with rice flakes and jaggery. Each dish in the Sadya holds significance, contributing to the festival's spirit of harmony and community. The meal is not just about eating; it's a sensory experience that reflects Kerala's unique culinary traditions. The elaborate meal, along with the beautiful floral decorations (Pookalam) and traditional dances like Thiruvathira Kali, makes Onam a truly special and memorable festival.

There is a lot of focus on food, and people enthusiastically prepare the traditional Onam ‘sadhya’ – a meal of 20+ dishes served on a plantain leaf. There are many types of kheer, sweets and vegetable dishes prepared on that day, not to forget steamed and deep-fried snacks and pancakes. Ada Pradhaman, Chakka Pradhaman and Nei Payasam are some of the famous kheers, while Unniappam, Vada and Upperi are amongst the famous snacks.

Avial, Thoran, Puliseri, Pachadi, vegetable curries, and many more main course dishes are also prepared on the day! Indeed, in every way, it is a day of holistic celebration. The air is resonant with temple bells, music and laughter. The most notable thing about Onam is that it is a festival without religious boundaries. Everybody in Kerala celebrates it – and that, is the true spirit of any festival!
