Chilla is a thin, pancake like snack that is very popular in Gujarat and Maharashtra. The Indian palak moong dal cheela is made of a wholesome batter of moong dal and spinach, perked up with a couple of commonly available spice powders and pastes.
A dash of crushed cumin boosts the aroma and flavour of the spinach lentil pancake further, making it absolutely awesome. Chillas are meant to be had as soon as they are cooked, to enjoy the slightly-crisp fresh texture, so make sure you relish them right off the tava.
These pancakes are loaded with fiber – a nutrient which helps to maintain gut health. The spinach is a good source of iron which helps to boost hemoglobin levels and avoid fatigue setting in. For moong dal palak chilla- To make moong dal palak chilla, combine the yellow moong dal and enough water in a deep bowl and soak for 2 hours. Drain well.
- Blend in a mixer along with ½ cup of water till smooth.
- Transfer the mixture into a deep bowl, add all the remaining ingredients and approx. ¼ cup of water and mix well.
- Heat a non-stick tava (griddle) and grease with a little oil.
- Pour a ladleful of the batter on it and spread it in a circular motion to make a 175 mm. (7”) diameter circle.
- Cook for 1 minute on a medium flame. Smear a little oil over it and along the edges.
- Flip over and cook on the other side as well. Cook on a medium flame till the cheela turns brown in colour and crisp.
- Serve the moong dal palak chilla immediately with green chutney.

what is moong dal palak chilla made of? moong dal palak cheela is made from 3/4 cup yellow moong dal (split yellow gram), 1/2 cup finely chopped spinach (palak), 1 tsp green chilli paste, 1/2 tsp ginger (adrak) paste, 1/4 tsp asafoetida (hing), 1/4 tsp chilli powder, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder (haldi), 1/2 tsp coarsely crushed cumin seeds (jeera) and salt to taste. This is what yellow moong dal looks like. Yellow moong dal refers to moong beans that have been skinned and split, so that they're flat, yellow, and quick-cooking. They're relatively easy to digest.

Put the yellow moong dal in water and wash it. You can see the dirt. This will require you to change the water 2 to 3 times till you get clean water.

Cover and soak the dal in warm water for at least 2 hours.

Add 1/2 tsp coarsely crushed cumin seeds (jeera).

Add salt to taste. We added 1/2 tsp salt.

Add 1/4 cup of water.

Mix batter well.

Pour a ladeful of batter and spread in a circular shape of 175 mm ( 7 inches ) in diameter.

Smear a little oil over it and along the edges.

Flip over.

Cook on a medium flame till the cheela turns brown in colour and crisp for 30 to 45 seconds. Flip over. Your cheela is ready. If you feel you need to cook further then do that by flipping and cooking till golden brown.
