mango lassi is a yummy Indian drink made from mangoes, curd, milk and sugar (optional). Consumed mainly when Indian mangoes are in season during the peak of the hot summer, Punjabi mango lassi cools the body down.

Mango, the King of Fruits has many followers world over. Punjab is no different. Punjabi's love mangoes and have mango-based recipes in almost every course of the meal, right from the signature Aam ka Achaar made with raw mangoes to delicious, cool Mango Lassi made with juicy ripe ones.

The mango pulp imparts a rich golden colour as well as an irresistible aroma and flavour to the mango lassi. When mangoes are not in season, frozen pulp can be used instead to make mango lassi.

How to make a healthy mango lassi? You can drop the sugar from the recipe as mangoes have their own sweetness. Also those who are lactose intolerant, can use almond milk in place of full fat milk.

Notes on mango lassi recipe. 1. We have used Alphonso mangoes but you can use any other variety. Make sure that the mangoes are completely ripe. 2. Add the curd into the mixer jar. Curd is the key ingredient for any lassi including Mango Lassi. 3. Add the cold milk. We have added the milk to thin the Mango Lassi down and obtain the desired consistency. You can use same quantity of water also. 4. You can also add about ¼ tsp of cardamom powder, a few drops of rose water, honey or a few strands of saffron to flavour the lassi.

Ingredients

For Mango Lassi
1 1/2 cups chilled and roughly chopped mangoes
1 1/2 cups fresh curd (dahi)
1/2 cup cold milk
2 tbsp powdered sugar

  1. To make mango lassi, combine all the ingredients and blend in a mixer till it is smooth and frothy.
  2. Pour the mango lassi into 2 individual glasses and serve immediately garnished with mangoes.

How to make Mango Lassi

  1. To make mango lassi | Punjabi mango lassi | take 2 to 3 medium sized chilled mangoes and peel them. We have used Alphonso mangoes but you can use any other variety. Make sure that the mangoes are completely ripe.
  2. Chop the mangoes up roughly. Do not discard the seed.
  3. Take a deep mixer jar and put the mangoes into it.
  4. Squeeze the seeds over the mixer jar with your hands to extract all the pulp from them. Now, you can discard the seed. 
  5. Now, add the curd into the mixer jar. Curd is the key ingredient for any lassi including Mango Lassi.
  6. Add the cold milk. We have added the milk to thin the Mango Lassi down and obtain the desired consistency. You can use same quantity of water also.
  7. Add the sugar to sweeten the Mango Lassi. You can also add about ¼ tsp of cardamom powder, a few drops of rose water, honey or a few strands of saffron to flavour the lassi. You can increase the quantity of sugar as per your liking or if the mangoes are not very sweet. Also, make sure that you use fresh curd.
  8. Blend all the ingredients in the mixer till they become smooth and develop frothiness.
  9. Pour the Mango Lassi into 2 individual glasses.
  10. Garnish them with a few mango cubes. You can also garnish with a few chopped nuts and saffron strands.
  11. Serve the Mango Lassi immediately. You can add a few ice cubes if you wish to.

Hi..can I use frozen mangoes and vanilla yoghurt...I tried making it once with fresh curd and it tasted horrible.....

Tarla Dalal    Hi Shiwani, you can try but it wont be a Mango lassi then, it will be considered as a smoothie. Try using fresh curd which isnt sour in taste. And chill the lassi before serving.
