For drumstick dal- To make drumstick dal, combine the dal, turmeric and 2 cups of water in a pressure cooker, mix well and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
- Allow the steam to escape, before opening the lid. Whisk well and keep aside.
- Transfer the dal in a deep non-stick pan, add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, garlic, kashmiri red chillies, curry leaves and sauté for few seconds.
- Add tomatoes and cook on medium flame for 2 minutes.
- Add drumstick, red chilli powder and 1 cup of water, mix well and cover it with a lid and cook on a medium flame for 12 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
- Add the cooked dal and salt to taste. Mix well and cook on a medium flame for 7 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
- Serve the drumstick dal hot with roti or rice.

To make drumstick dal, in a bowl, take 1 cup toovar (arhar) dal .

Add enough water.

Soak for 15 minutes.

Drain well.

Transfer it into a pressure cooker.

Add ½ tsp turmeric powder (haldi).

Add 2 cups of water.

Mix well and pressure cook for 3 whistles.

Allow the steam to escape, before opening the lid.

Whisk well and keep aside.

Heat 1 tbsp oil in a deep non-stick pan.

Add ½ tsp cumin seeds.

Add 1 tsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson).

Add ½ tbsp finely chopped garlic.

Add 1 whole dry kashmiri red chilli , broken into pieces.

Add 5 to 6 curry leaves.

Sauté for few seconds.

Add ¾ cup chopped tomatoes.

Cook on medium flame for 2 minutes.

Add 1 cup drumsticks (saijan ki phalli / saragavo) , cut into 50 mm. pieces cut into 50 mm. (2") pieces.

Add 1 tsp chilli powder.

Add 1 cup of water.

Mix well and cover it with a lid.

Cook on a medium flame for 12 minutes, while stirring occasionally.

Add the cooked dal.

Add salt to taste.

Mix well and cook on a medium flame for 7 minutes, while stirring occasionally.

Serve drumstick dal hot with roti or rice.
