Varagu Sweet Potato Chilla | Kodri Sweet Potato Cheela | healthy Millet Shakarkand pancake |
The Varagu Sweet Potato Chilla is a wholesome, flavour-packed Indian pancake made using the nutritious millet kodri (varagu) and naturally sweet shakarkand (sweet potato). This unique combination creates a soft, hearty cheela with a mildly sweet and earthy taste. Blended with semolina, rice flour, curd, and aromatic vegetables, the batter turns into a perfectly pourable mix that cooks into golden, delicious chillas. This recipe offers the comfort of a traditional cheela with the added benefits of millet and root vegetables.
As a Kodri Sweet Potato Cheela, it showcases the richness of ancient grains. Varagu is a fibre-rich millet known for its lightness and easy digestibility. When combined with cooked sweet potato, it gives the chilla a soft interior and a crisp surface, balancing flavours beautifully. These ingredients also make the cheela naturally more filling, ideal for breakfast, snacks, or even a light dinner. The addition of curd adds a mild tang, further enhancing the overall taste.
The inclusion of onions, green chillies, and coriander brings freshness, crunch, and gentle spice to the cheela. These veggies elevate the texture while making the dish vibrant and appetising. The batter, when spread over a hot tava and cooked with minimal oil, becomes a nutritious pancake that is soft inside and lightly crisp outside. Covering the chilla while cooking ensures even steaming, allowing all ingredients to bind beautifully.
This Millet Shakarkand Pancake is especially appealing because it uses easy, everyday ingredients yet delivers exceptional flavour. The natural sweetness of sweet potatoes pairs wonderfully with the mild nuttiness of varagu. It is also versatile—you can serve it with green chutney, curd, mint dip, or even a light tomato chutney. Whether eaten hot for breakfast or packed in a tiffin, it stays soft and enjoyable.
In terms of nutrition, Varagu Sweet Potato Chilla is definitely healthy. Kodri (varagu) millet is rich in fibre, magnesium, and antioxidants, making it great for digestion, metabolism, and energy levels. Sweet potatoes add complex carbohydrates, beta-carotene, potassium, and natural sweetness without added sugar. The use of curd supports gut health, while onions and coriander add additional micronutrients. With only a small amount of oil used for cooking, the chilla remains light and heart-friendly.
Overall, this millet-based cheela is a smart alternative to regular besan or rice-flour chillas. It keeps you fuller for longer, provides steady energy, and supports better blood sugar balance due to its high fibre content. When eaten with a healthy chutney, the Varagu Sweet Potato Chilla becomes a complete, balanced, and deliciously satisfying meal suitable for all ages.
