I am a maharashtrian and I am sorry to say but Varan bhaat is devoid of any onion tomato or green chilli. In all maharashtrian homes that I have come across, varan is made by boiling tuvar daal..mash it . Add water to make soup like consistency. Add hing, haldi, jaggery and salt. Bring to a boil. Serve hot with rice and top it with ghee and lime juice. What your recipe states is an aamti not varan.
