Ingredients
For The Masala
- 3 tbsp coconut oil
- 1/2 cup shallots (madras onions)
- 3 dry fresh red chilli , broken into pieces
- 1 tsp coriander (dhania) seeds
- 1 tsp chopped ginger (adrak)
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
- 1/2 tsp garam masala
- 1/2 cup freshly grated coconut
- 4 curry leaves (kadi patta)
- 1/2 tsp garlic (lehsun)
Other Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups soaked chawli (cow pea / lobhia)
- 1/4 cup sliced onions
- salt to taste

2 tsp coconut oil/ any refined oil
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson)
- 2 curry leaves (kadi patta)
- 2 tbsp shallots (madras onions)
- 1 tbsp grated coconut
- 1 whole dry Kashmiri red chilli , broken into pieces
Method
- Heat the oil in a pan and roast all the ingredients till they release an aroma. Keep aside to cool.
- Blend in a mixer to a fine powder and keep aside.
- Combine the red chawli with 4 cups of water and boil till soft. Occasionally remove the froth that collects on top.
- Add the onions, prepared masala and salt , mix well and cook till the curry thickens. Keep aside.
- Heat the oil in a pan, and add the mustard seeds and curry leaves.
- When they crackle, add the shallots and sauté for a minute.
- Add the coconut and red chillies and sauté till it releases an aroma.
- Pour the tempering on the curry and serve hot.
