Description
The Seaweed Sushi Sheet is an ingredient commonly used in Japanese cuisine, to make the famous dish – Sushi. Seaweed is also called “nori” in Japanese, so you might find it mentioned that way on the label sometimes. Seaweeds are green aquatic plants like algae. Edible seaweeds for making sushi sheets are often cultivated near the sea. Seaweed is then sun-dried and processed to make these sushi sheets.

Seaweed Sushi Sheets are a dark, greenish-black in colour. They are very light-weight, paper-thin and usually square-shaped. The Japanese sometimes make crisp chips out of nori to enjoy as a snack.


How to select
• Also known as Sushi Sheets or Nori Sheets, Seaweed Sheets are available in gourmet or specialty food stores like Nature’s Basket, Food Hall, etc.
• They are sold in packets containing approximately 10 sheets.
• Choose a popular brand, and check the expiry date on the package before buying.

How to store
• Store in a dry and cool place, away from moisture.
• Once you open the packet, make sure you store in a dry, airtight container.

Culinary uses
• Seaweed sheets are used to make Sushi, a famous Japanese dish. It is lightly roasted on an open flame, cooled and then moistened slightly by sprinkling water just before making the sushi.
• Sushi sheets may also be cut into strips and toasted to make crisp Nori Chips, which the Japanese love to have as a snack.

Health benefits
• They have a protein content ranging from 20 to 70 per cent, depending on the seaweeds used.
• Seaweed sheets are rich in vitamins and minerals, especially iodine, calcium, iron, magnesium, and vitamins B1, B2, B6 and C.
• It is also a good source of fibre, which has a laxative effect and is good for curing constipation.
